10 ways to save the ocean
National Geographic Magazine have produced a list of 10 simple ways that we can help save the ocean in day to day life.
1 - Watch your Carbon Footprint and simply don’t use as much energy. Why not use the heating less and buy compact fluorescent light bulbs from now on? Cycling or walking to work reduces your carbon footprint and can help save the ocean and the marine life within.
2 – Watch what you eat. Be mindful of some fish species that are dying off because of loss of habitat and overfishing. Restaurant delicacies that are endangered include Monkfish, Shark and Swordfish. Instead you could opt for Salmon, Mackerel or Halibut.
3 – Plastics. We all know where they end up, so the simple tip is to cut down on using them. Also if we reuse plastics the damage is significantly reduced. It’s eco-friendly and cost effective.
4 - Respect the ocean. When you’re at the beach, don’t tamper with nature. You can observe the natural beauty without destroying it, and if you clean up after yourself on the shore, you’ll be doing even extra to help the environment.
5 – Some products you may buy can do damage to the ocean floor. Items such as coral necklaces and shark products are ones to avoid.
6 – Pets. Make sure that their food is good for the sea. Read pet food labels and consider sea sustainability when choosing the right pet food. Furthermore putting aquarium fish in the ocean can tamper with the eco-system so again this is one to steer clear of.
7 – Help to support those that save the ocean. This is beneficial for those who want to do their bit and become a little greener.
8 – Voicing your concern in the community is another helpful one. You could even approach restaurants and shops to share your views and consider stocking foods that are friendly to the ocean.
9 - Travel the seas in an eco-friendly way. Choose the greenest option and don’t dump anything in the water.
10 – Learn more about what’s going on under the surface. Find out about marine life and habitats and pass this information on to others.
