Carbon Offsetting
One way to help combat the rise in CO2 emissions is Carbon Offsetting. One of the more popular methods is by planting trees to help neutralise the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
How it works
Trees absorb CO2 through a process called photosynthesis, converting CO2 and water into oxygen and plant matter. The planting of trees aids reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere. The trees then store the left-over carbon in its trunk, branches, roots and even the surrounding soil. More trees means less carbon dioxide.
Neutralise the impact
By using trees we help to neutralise your carbon footprint. We calculate how much carbon dioxide your car releases in a year and then balance this by allocating enough trees to offset this amount. Think of it like this, carbon dioxide is bad, tree planting is good and the good cancels out the bad.
Our offset project
Our initial project is a new forest being planted at St Cyrus near Montrose in Scotland. The site is called Milton of Mathers and can be found just off the A92. The site will cover 4.3 hectares and consists of different species including Oak, Birch and Ash. Our money has enabled the project to go ahead and gives us exclusive rights to use the forest for offsetting CO2 emissions. Although a voluntary project the scheme will be subject to rigid audit to ensure that it delivers on its contractual commitments and that the new forest is being properly managed. We have teamed up with Forest Carbon www.forest-carbon.co.uk to oversee this. The forest will have full access rights and anyone is free to visit it. You may even hug the trees if you so wish.
